We loved our first Portugal and Douro River Cruise so much that we decided to take over the entire ship and invite some of our favorite organizations to join us for our upcoming 2025 tour. We will be partnering with our preservation colleagues at Adirondack Architectural Heritage, our local LGBTQ organization Rochester Rainbow Union, and the supporters of Rochester’s own PUSH Physical Theatre and the NYS Puppet Festival, out of Perry, NY. The cruise will be a fundraiser for the partnering organizations and allow the guests from each group to meet each other and learn about the other not-for profits. We also will have the opportunity for special programming including short performances to enjoy PUSH and Puppets in Portugal!
The tour begins in Lisbon with two days in this magical city concluding with a dinner at a Fado music venue. Next, we are off to Porto by coach with stops at Fatima, the important Catholic pilgrimage site and Coimbra, the famous university town where some of us might be able to find the little restaurant that serves roasted suckling pig, a local delicacy. In Porto we will board the luxurious MS Emerald Radiance for the next seven nights on the Douro river.
As we cruise along the Douro river, enjoy gourmet dining onboard and complimentary regional wines, beer, and soft drinks with lunch and dinner. We will make stops and takes excursions to wonderful cities and towns throughout Portugal where we will experience the architecture, landscape, history, culture, and wineries. And the locks! What a great experience going through the many locks along the river. Spain is also included in the tour with a stop at UNESCO World Heritage Site of Salamanca, where a lucky guest may even get to dance with the Tuna music band! Two more stops along the Douro enroute back to Porto will expose us to more of the breathtaking countryside and historic sites. Porto will excite you with its eclectic mix of modern and ancient architecture and we will enjoy a lovely sunset cruise in the capital city.
