If you’re a fan of PBS’s “Downton Abbey,” you will enjoy Montgomery Place, a National Historic Landmark property in continuous ownership by one family since the early 19th century.

It is the only Hudson River estate from this period to remain intact, with remarkable furnishings, art work and A.J Davis-designed mansion, set in extensive landscaping created by Andrew Jackson Downing, one of America’s pioneer landscape designers.  We will also visit the home of another U.S. president – Martin Van Buren, whose picturesque residence, Lindenwald, near Kinderhook, NY has been carefully restored by the National Park Service.

A tour highlight will be our visit and overnight stay at Mohonk Mountain House, a National Historic Landmark resort tucked away atop the Shawangunk Ridge of the Catskill Mountains.  Located on the shore of Lake Mohonk, it was recently voted the Number 1 spa resort in the United States.  Unique in the North America, Mohonk Mountain House, gardens, nature reserve will be our lodging, dining, and touring location for the final day of our Hudson Valley adventure.

Tour Schedule:
Day 1   Depart Monday, September 15 with a stop enroute for lunch in Albany.  After lunch, we will visit Lindenwald, the historic home of U.S. President Martin Van Buren.  A drive to Rhinebeck will bring us to the Beekman Arms Hotel, our home for the next 2 nights.  A relaxing dinner and a chance to stroll this charming village will end our first day.

Day 2 – the morning will begin with a visit to Montgomery Place estate, near Barrytown;  Lunch will be at the Terrapin,  a historic  Gothic Revival church in Rhinebeck that has been creatively renovated as a restaurant.  After lunch, we’ll head to Hyde Park for a tour of Springwood, the Roosevelt family estate most known for its last owners, Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt.  The day will conclude with dinner at the Culinary Institute of American, one of the world’s top training centers for professional chefs (pending reservation availability.)

Day 3 – We begin the day at Wilderstein, an extraordinary Victorian house and estate owned by the Suckley family, cousins of Franklin Roosevelt, from the 1880s to the 1990s! Its last owner, Margaret “Daisy” Suckley, was FDR’s archivist and the chatelaine of this property into the late 20th century. New Paltz is next for lunch and a stroll along their Main Street Huguenot district with its 18th-century stone buildings.  By late afternoon, we will wend our way up the mountain to Mohonk Mountain House, a breathtaking, castle-like, resort hotel set amidst the splendors of the Shawangunk Mountains. We will take Tea, that afternoon, get settled in our rooms, and prepare for a relaxing stay through our final day, which will include dinner, breakfast, lunch and many hours to explore this world-famous property, with its scenic lake, gardens, trails, and historic hotel.

Day 4 – Continue our visit to Mohonk Mountain House, which will include breakfast and lunch.  Your time is your own to explore, relax, swim, hike, shop, sight-see, and take in all the wonders this National Historic Landmark has to offer!  We’ll depart for Rochester mid-afternoon with a stop for refreshment on your own on the way home.

Please note: this tour will include navigating stairs, walking and standing for tours which may be an hour in length, and touring outside in variable weather conditions.  Registration fee includes the company of our executive director Wayne Goodman and Landmark Society staff escort, two nights at the Beekman Arms Hotel and one night at the Mohonk Mountain House, comfortable motor coach transportation,  3 breakfasts,  4 lunches, 3 dinners, all admissions, tours, and gratuities.
