This Saturday: Bikes Beer & Buildings Scavenger Hunt
Grab your bikes, your smart phone, a few friends and join the Young Urban Preservationists (or YUPs—a group of The Landmark Society) for Rochester’s first bike scavenger hunt, followed by a few well-deserved drinks at LUX Bar & Lounge. You’ll see some of Rochester’s best known gems and little known secrets, you’ll get some exercise, and you might even learn something new about the Flower City.
Saturday, July 12th | Meet @ Star Alley (662 South Ave. in the S. Wedge) at 12:30 PM | Teams of 1-4 | $5/person | First beer (after the hunt) is on us!

At Risk Again: 660 West Main St.

The vacant church building at 660 West Main St. in the city of Rochester (formerly the home of the Westminster Presbyterian Church and subsequently the Liederkranz Club) is again at risk and we need your help. Under the City of Rochester’s Zoning Code, 660 West Main is a Designated Building of Historic Value (DBHV). City Code prohibits the demolition of a DBHV, however, property owners can apply for a variance from the code to allow demolition. In November, 2012, the owner applied for such a variance, proposing to replace it with a generic new construction (a sideways strip mall) that would house a Dollar General. The ZBA denied that application. The owner has now filed another application for demolition and proposes to replace the historic building with a new single story commercial building.
The City’s Zoning Board of Appeals will consider the application for a variance to allow demolition of a DBHV next Thursday, July 17th. Please consider attending the hearing or submitting written comments:

On Friday, August 1st, the YUPs will host a special celebration at The Landmark Society’s historic site in downtown Rochester, St. Joseph’s Park. For many years, the Park has been locked and closed to the public due to deferred maintenance needs. This summer, The Landmark Society has been making some of these repairs and soon we’ll be ready to re-open the gates at St. Joseph’s Park and welcome the public back in!
Join the YUPs on August 1st as we celebrate the re-opening of St. Joseph’s Park! Save the date and stay tuned for additional details.
