Cocktails & Carburetors - September 22nd & 23rd

Last chance to get your ticket for this week’s Cocktails & Carburetors party! The annual event is returning to FLX Auto Storage on Friday, September 22nd from 5pm to 8pm. FLX Auto Storage, located at 384 East Ave in Macedon, is a high-end storage facility for vehicles including a social lounge. Founded in 2018 by Jim Swetman as a place that would combine his interest in racing with vehicles storage, there will be a number of vintage vehicles at the facility for the party. The party will have catering by Betty Klein, music by Mystic Stew, a silent auction, and plenty of cocktails and great conversation. Guests are encouraged to drive their collector cars so all attendees can enjoy them in the parking area.

Included in your ticket price will be a tour of private garages on Saturday. Take a self-guided tour of several private garages and car collections from 10am to 4pm (a map will be provided to ticketholders at the Friday night party). Tickets are $95 and are available on our website.

Submit your projects and ideas for the 2024 NY Statewide Preservation Conference

We are now accepting proposals for educational sessions at the NY Statewide Preservation Conference! The Conference will take place in person in Rochester, NY, Spring 2024 (stay tuned for dates!)

Session proposals should address a broad range of preservation-related topics from project case studies and technical services to uncovered histories and the future of the field. Sessions can be a combination of presentations, short films, Q&A sessions, panel discussions, and guided neighborhood tours and/or building tours.

Guidelines:

  • We accept and encourage proposals on all topics related to historic preservation.
  • Sessions that include diverse panelists/speakers, including people of color, women, LGBTQ, and youth will receive priority consideration.
  • All panels should represent diverse perspectives and lived experiences.
  • Topics that address historically marginalized communities and current issues regarding social justice and equity as they relate to historic preservation (i.e. gentrification, intangible heritage, non-traditional or new preservation practices) will receive priority consideration.

You do not need to be a preservation professional to share your story. Whether you are a grassroots community activist, an urban planner, a non-profit organization, an architect, a neighborhood group, a developer, property owner, or a municipality, we want to hear from you! We are looking for a diverse range of topics that include everything from neighborhood advocacy and small town revitalization to complex tax credit rehab projects and place-based event planning.

Proposals are due by Monday, October 16th at 11:59pm.

The NY Statewide Preservation Conference is presented by: The Landmark Society of Western New York; City of Rochester; The Preservation League of New York State; and the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.

Ghost Walk - October 20 & 21

The Landmark Society’s Ghost Walk is a nighttime guided walking tour. Follow lantern-bearing guides down the dark streets of a historic neighborhood, and encounter ghosts from Rochester’s past – each with a true historic (and sometimes gory) event to relate!

All tours start at the Lutheran Church of the Incarnate Word at the corner of East Avenue and Goodman Street. The tour is about an hour, with groups leaving every fifteen minutes between 6:30 PM and 8:30 PM on Friday, October 20th and Saturday, October 21st.

Advance tickets ($22) are strongly encouraged, to give you best choice of tour times and avoid a lengthy wait at the event. Online ticket sales will close at 1 pm on each tour day, however a limited number of tickets will be available for all tours at the door on a first come, first served basis, for $25.

All sales are final, with no refunds or tour time exchanges. Tour will proceed regardless or weather, “rain or shine”. The tour is recommended for children 8 and up.

Bringing a group of 10 or more? Inquire about group reservations at cboyer@landmarksociety.org.

Join us for a YUPventure hike and afternoon in Naples

The YUPs are going on a (rescheduled) adventure on Saturday, October 28th! We’ll start the day off with a moderate 2-3 mile hike in the Wesley Hill Nature Preserve to the Wenrich Cabin. The cabin was built by nationally known artist John Wenrich in 1926 as a place of respite and contemplation. For years, the cabin has sat unused and unmaintained. The Landmark Society included it in our 2023 Five to Revive list to draw attention to this rapidly deteriorating but magical place.

After the hike, we’ll head into town for behind-the-scenes tours of two Naples landmarks: the 1794 Federal style Cleveland House (operated by the Naples Historical Society) and the 1965 St. Januarius Church, designed by James Johnson (architect of the famed Mushroom House).

We’ll cap off the day with a few drinks at Engine 14 Brewery.

Cost is $12.51 per person, and space is limited.  All ages are welcome. Check the link below for a detailed itinerary and FAQ.

This is going to be a fun, casual adventure with several members of the Young Urban Preservationists, (YUPs for short).  We are an affiliate group of The Landmark Society, are an emerging generation of preservationists in the greater Rochester region dedicated to promoting inclusive, modern, and innovative preservation practices to help revitalize communities and our built environment.  Please spread the word if you know someone that might be interested!
