Elmwood East Historic District

A message from the Elmwood East National Register Historic District Initiative:

Dear Elmwood East Neighbor and Friend,

Please make a generous, tax-deductible contribution to The Landmark Society of WNY for the Elmwood East National Register Historic District Initiative. This community-funded neighborhood initiative is being led by a Community Council made up of our Elmwood neighbors under the auspices of the Landmark Society and with the support of Preservation Buffalo Niagara.

We need your help to bring the benefits of a National Register Historic District home! There are incentives – enhanced neighborhood identity and brand, enhanced community pride and enhanced real property values – plus, you may live in a census tract that is eligible for the state historic homeownership tax credit program.

Your contribution will create a National Register Historic District- not a local historic district that requires local preservation board review. National Register listing will officially recognize the special place in which we live. Listing fosters pride of place, enhances real estate value, and allows access to a state income tax credit of 20% of the costs of pre-approved improvements that you make to your historic house, if it is deemed historic, is in an eligible census tract, and if you choose to apply for the tax credits.

Eligible expenses include hard and soft costs for roofing, painting, window repair, utilities and work related to the operation or maintenance of your historic house. There are state and federal income tax credits for rehabilitating historic commercial properties, and grants are available for historic churches, temples, and not-for-profit properties if they are deemed historic in a historic district.

Your tax-deductible contribution to The Landmark Society pays for having the specialists who prepared the successful nomination of the Elmwood West National Register Historic District also prepare the Elmwood East nomination and to see it through approval this year.
