Linwood Gardens exclusive guided
tour for The Landmark Society
Enjoy an exclusive guided tour of Linwood Gardens on Friday, May, 28, 2010.
Linwood’s history and design is unique to Western New York. Located 35 miles
south west of Rochester in the farmlands of the Genesee Valley, this garden
landscape was designed in the early 1900s with an Arts and Crafts style
summerhouse, walled gardens with pools and fountains, ornamental trees, and a
view of the valley below. The historic garden is known for its collection of
Tree Peonies and features a distinguished collection of Japanese and American
tree peonies. Each spring when the tree peonies are in bloom, Linwood celebrates
this special event at the Festival of Flowers. Linwood Gardens is not-for-profit
and is listed on The York State Register of Historic Places.
Our special guided in-depth walking tour will take us on an exploration of
the gardens and surrounding landscape. There will be time to explore the gardens
on your own. After our tour we will enjoy wonderful lunch at The Yard of Ale
located in Piffard. This historic structure built in 1840 was originally
established as an inn at the intersection of a major commercial stagecoach route
between Bath and Batavia.
After lunch we will visit The Abbey of the Genesee. The Abbey is a community
of more than two dozen contemplative monks. They are a member of the Order of
Cistercians of the Strict Observance, commonly known as the Trappists. The
monk’s work largely consists of baking a brand of bread called Monk’s Bread. (Of
course, there will be plenty of time to purchase bread!)
Cost of the tour is $122, which includes transportation, all tours, lunch
gratuities and guide service for the group activities. Call Cheryl at 546-7029
ext. 23 for a reservation form.
Reservation deadline: April 24, 2010
