PARK(ing) Day 2015 this Friday

PARK(ING) DAY 2015

Join the YUPs this Friday for PARK(ing) Day 2015 as we take over an unused surface lot in the heart of downtown Rochester’s famed parking crater! There will be mini-golf, lawn games, lunchtime yoga and more! We’ll be joined by Writers & Books and Rochester Greenovation. Meet us at the northwest corner of Franklin and Pleasant Streets (101-113 Franklin St., near St. Joseph’s Park).

PARK(ing) Day is an annual open-source global event where citizens, artists and activists collaborate to temporarily transform parking spaces into “PARK(ing)” spaces: temporary public places. The mission of PARK(ing) Day is to call attention to the need for more urban open space, to generate critical debate around how public space is created and allocated, and to improve the quality of urban human habitat.

Last year, Rochester had the dubious distinction of winning the 2014 Streetsblog USA Parking Madness Tournament (read more at Rochester Subway). We want to reignite the discussion about the over-abundance of parking and Rochester’s over-reliance on the automobile. We want to ask the question–what might better serve our community?

Inside Downtown Tour: Volunteers Needed

This year the Inside Downtown Tour takes us to the Washington Square neighborhood (and beyond!). Highlights include: Capron Lofts, Artists’ Lofts at Woodbury Place, the Bevier Building, Edge of the Wedge, and more!

The YUPs will be staffing the little Greek Revival house (former home of Wahl’s Offset Service) across the street from the back of Geva Theatre. See more images of the building on Rochester Subway. Owner and developer, Patrick Dutton, is seeking creative reuse options for this lonely little building so we’ve decided to temporarily take over the space and solicit ideas during Inside Downtown.

If you’re interested in staffing the site during the Tour, email Caitlin Meives. Shifts will be: Friday, 10/2 (5-8:30pm) and Saturday, 10/3 (10:30am-1:30pm or 1:00-4:00pm).

Save the Date

Mark your calendars for our next Happy Hour and Open Meeting: Wednesday, October 7th. Location details coming soon!
