William B. Morse Lumber Company 340 West Main Street, Rochester, New York
Established in 1853, the William B. Morse Lumber Company is one of the oldest family-owned businesses in Rochester. Located on their West Main Street campus since the 1860s, this is a company that, literally, has helped build Rochester almost since the city was established. From the 1860s to 1920, deliveries to their lumber yard were via the Erie Canal. Their location next to the city’s main railroad corridor continues to facilitate delivery of lumber supplies. Founder William B. Morse grew up on an apple farm in Sodus and came to Rochester in 1842 to seek his fortune. Now, 175 years later, the fifth generation of the Morse family heads up this historic company. Building materials and expertise from the company are provided mainly to professional builders, but retail customers are also part of their work. A unique landmark at the western gateway to downtown, their historic lumber yard has been a major anchor on West Main Street for over 160 years.
